About Koloa

Koloa is one of Kauai's most unique communities. Located on Kauai's south shores, Koloa was the site of Hawaii's first sugarcane plantation. The plantation was established in 1835 and is now a National Historic Landmark. Today, Koloa retains the charm of it's past on the streets of Old Koloa Town and along the Koloa Heritabe Trail, which runs from Old Koloa Town to Poipu.

Koloa is also a short distance to many of Kauai's most scenic beaches. For example, Poipu Beach offers beautiful views of the Pacific, and, since it's protected by a reef, is a safe place for swimming and surfing. Looking for a remote and undeveloped coastline? Try Mahaulepu Beach. It's a perfect locatin for surfing, diving, and simply relaxing. Another excellent beach close by is Kiahuna Beach. It's protected by an outlying reef, so the it's waters are somewhat calm. It's a great location for learning to surf or for snorkeling. Other beaches close by include Lawai Beach, Shipwrecks Beach, and Ha'ula Beach.

The Koloa area is also a great place for golfers. Poipu Bay Golf Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. It features beautiul greens and fantastic views of the coastline. Kiahuna Golf Club, also designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., is located on Poipu Beach. It's a challenging course with unique obstacles. The area is also a sanctuary for many of the island's endangered species, including the Nene and Black-Crowned Night Heron.

Poipu Beach Park

Poipu Beach Park, just three miles south of Koloa, is popular with locals and tourists...and for good reason. Poipu Beach is considered one of the best beaches in the United States, with sparkling waters, pristine sands, and perfect weather. The park itself has plenty of parking, restrooms, showers, and picnic areas. Lifeguards are on duty seven days a week.

Poipu Beach is actually made of two beaches, separated by Nukumoi Point. The western side of Nukumoi Point has small waves that break on a shallow sandbar. It's a great place for bodyboarding, surfing, snorkeling, and windsurfing. The eastern side of the point is know as Baby Beach. It features a shallow area for swimming. Baby Beach is perfect for families with young kids.

Nukumoi Point is also a popular attraction. Hawaiian monk seals visit this narrow strip of sand, sometimes napping in the afternoons.

Restaurants

Koloa is home to a number of excellent restaurants and bars offering a wide variety of cuisines. Tidepools, for example, serves upscale Hawaiian cuisine in an unforgettable setting. It's considered one of Kauai's best restaurants.

Merriman's Poipu Kauai is another restaurant you'll want to make a point of visiting. Located in an old Hawaii plantation, they feature locally grown and locally caught products.

And don't pass up a chance to stop by the Beach House Restaurant. They feature Pacific Rim cuisine, fantastic cocktails, unforgettable ocean views, and old-fashioned Hawaiian hospitality.
